I. Introduction
Merapi is a strata-volcano located in Central Java, Indonesia, about 30 km north of Yogyakarta city which has more than one million inhabitants (Figure 1, Figure 2). It is part of the volcanic front of the Sunda-Banda magmatic arc produced by collision of the Australian plate under the Eurasian plate. The Indonesian archipelago resulted from complex and diverse tectonic processes. The present phase of volcanic activity in Indonesia commenced in the mid-Miocene and is still in progress. Having an average eruption frequency of once every 4-5 years with more explosive and larger episodes every few decades, this volcano is considered one of Indonesia’s most active volcanos. Despite the danger of living close to a volcano, many people occupy fertile land surrounding Merapi, risking exposure to volcanic mudflow and possible larger explosive eruptions. For this reason, Merapi was selected as one of the focus volcanoes during the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction

MORPHOLOGY
Merapi forms a bell-shaped topography that has a mean dip angle of 5° up to 1300 m and 15° up to the summit of 2911 m. Merapi's morphology is characterized by steep erosion valleys of all sizes and radial ridges. The SO2 gas is continuously discharging from the fumaroles and the lava dome.
YOGYAKARTA city:
Yogyakarta Special Region (Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, DIY) is officially one of Indonesia’s 32 provinces. This city is one of the foremost cultural centers of Java. This region is located at the foot of the active Merapi volcano. The population of Yogyakarta is approximately 3.311.812
Geographically, Yogyakarta Special Province is situated in the Southern part of Central Java. It is about 600 km eastern from Jakarta, and 1000 km from Bali. The majority residents of Yogyakarta are Javanese whose language derives from ancient Sanskrit. The average daily temperature range between 28oC up to 35oC
II.Event Summary
Mount Merapi erupted Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 17:02 West Indonesia Time.

As informed by the Center for Volcano logy and Geological Hazard Mitigation: Thursday night 28 October 2010 and Friday 29 October 2010 it sent deadly heat clouds down its slopes killing 64 people and destroying villages previously thought to be safe. Around 1,000 refugees from Kepuharjo village, Kecamatan Cangkringan and Kabupaten Sleman had to be immediately relocated.
In early November, the death casualties due to Merapi volcano eruption reached 259 (two hundred fifty nine) people. To date, there have been more than 500 people killed and over 400,000 people forced to flee their homes (according to the Indonesian Agency for Disaster Management).
In early December, after the government downgraded the alert level, many evacuees have left the evacuation points to return home. However, the government warned that there was still a danger of volcanic mud flooding homes and properties.
There are still thousands of families who cannot return to their villages because they were destroyed by the volcanic eruption.

Trees flattened by volcanic mudflows generated during the 2010 eruption of Merapi.

Sustained development is needed to educate the people, not just on how to overcome similar disasters, but to open new avenues for them. HOPE foundation and HOPE worldwide not only offers immediate relief to the survivors but also for as much as it is possible, stays back at the site to help the residents rebuild their lives from the pieces long after other non¬profit organizations have left.
