After the Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster on 11th of March, HAVI employees started a donation and charity drive. The funds collected were matched equally by HAVI businesses and a total of US$75,000 was raised. Out of this, US$20,000 was contributed directly to the U.S. Red Cross by HAVI Group, US$48,500 was given to Japan Red Cross by HAVI Logistics Asia and a total of US$6,500 was given to our Japanese employees so that their families and relatives can use the money to repair their houses and their lives.
So far, from the donations received by Japan Red Cross, US$2,000 to US$4,500 has been distributed to each household that sustained damages to their house; and/or had to evacuate because of the disaster; and to cover interim day to day living expenses of those affected.
The donations collected are appreciated very much by our Japanese colleagues. One employee wrote, “words cannot express our deep sense of gratitude and thanks for all you did for our family. My family fled to shelter from March 11th and now they are still in shelter. Our parents requested that I make sure you understand their appreciation and to express our sincere thanks to all of HAVI Group members. We are truly thankful for everything that you (Bill O’Brien), HAVI Group members and Kakushi-san did during this difficult time.”
Two months have passed since the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Tohoku Region of Japan on 11th of March. With the support and encouragement of well-wishers, the people in Tohoku are starting to bring their life back to normal. Schools, hospitals, transportation networks and logistics have mostly been restored. Also, various kinds of industries have started operating again. Musicians and comedians have started visiting evacuation shelters to cheer up the people. Evacuees shown on television looked happy and one said, "I laughed for the first time in a long while".
In the face of the Japan disaster, all of us in HAVI have come together to help Japan and we feel pleased and very proud to be a member of the HAVI family!.
