12th December 2010 was certainly a day to remember in the Circuit Hero 500 km Endurance Race at Zhuhai International Circuit. Bill O’Brien, President of HAVI Logistics Asia, driving No. 7 Caterham, was racing not just for glory, but also for charity! Every kilometer completed in the race would raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) in Hong Kong.
RMHC provides accommodation for sick children and their parents, so that the parents can accompany their children to hospital and go through the healing process together.
Bill’s team for the 500 km race included American Steve Garner, an accomplished driver, and Scotsman Nigel Farmer, an experienced competitor in international endurance racing.
Bill is very appreciative of what RMHC does and therefore decided to work with the other two drivers to do something for the Charity.
Donations from over 100 organizations and individuals were received including Coca-Cola. All the names of the sponsors were on the car. The three drivers bore the running costs of the car, allowing every single dollar raised to go directly to RMHC.
Iris Wong, House Manager of RMHC, and two former residents of Ronald McDonald House visited in the morning of 11th December 2010 to support the qualifying race. The kids were thrilled to seat in the race car’s cockpit.
Inspired by their visit, the team completed the full 500 km race, won their class by eleven laps and finished second overall. The team effort paid off, resulting in around HKD 400,000 in donations for RMH Charities.
Cheers to Bill and his team for driving his car and RMHC to victory!
